Textron has been in business for almost an entire century and has gone from a small textile company to a multinational conglomerate. They have condensed their company into five operating segments: Textron Aviation, Bell, Textron Systems, Industrial, and Finance. Throughout their history, they have acquired many business and brands, and have partnered with many different top tier companies. In 1953, Textron stepped foot into the transportation industry with their first non-textile acquisition— Burkart Manufacturing Co., which created automotive materials. From there, they acquired a diversity of businesses in the following sequence: Homelite, Camcar, CWC, E-Z-GO, Bell, Speidel, Sheaffer Pen, Bostich, Gorham, Jacobsen, AVCO Corporation, Greenlee, Cessna Aircraft Co., Kautex, Sherman + Reilly, HD Electric, TUG Technologies, Douglas Equipment, Mechtronix, OPINICUS, Beechcraft, Bad Boy Buggies, and Dixie Chopper. A lot of these acquired companies have been renamed and organized into different segments of Textron.
Moving forward and creating a hyper-focus on amplifying their core businesses, Textron acquired Cessna Aircraft Co. in the 1990s. In 2014, Textron purchased Beechcraft and formed the Textron Aviation segment, which included Beechcraft, Cessna, and Hawker.
A leader in general aviation, Textron Aviation manufacturers, sells, and services both Beechcraft and Cessna aircraft; general aviation is a term used to define civil aviation except passenger airliners. They also service Hawker business jets and offer military trainer and defense aircraft.
Textron’s Bell segment supplies commercial and military helicopters, as well as tiltrotor aircraft. They are a primary supplier to the U.S. military and are one of two companies that sell tiltrotor aircraft to the military; the other being Boeing. Bell’s commercial customers include police and fire departments; rescue and emergency operators; foreign governments; etc.
This segment sells to the U.S. Government; U.S. sponsored foreign militaries; and aerospace and general aviation markets. Some of their products include unmanned, marine, and land systems, as well as simulation and training devices.
Textron Industrial segment designs and sells items that are categorized into different product lines: fuel systems, functional components, and specialized vehicles. The part of the business that focused on tools and test equipment was sold in 2018.
Textron Inc. has manufacturing plants in Kansas, Georgia, and Mexico, among many other locations for various segments.
* This is consolidated; it lists the larger subsidiaries and excludes their subsidiaries.
Some of Textron’s primary competitors are Boeing, UTC, and Embraer; however, there are many more competitors within various markets.
